Khulan Day 2025

Khulan Day 2025: A Celebration of Voices Across the Steppe

This year, Khulan Day has been celebrated online again.

People from different corners of the Gobi joined the celebration by sharing their stories, quotes, photos, and videos about the khulan - this wild equid that symbolizes the vast and fragile beauty of the steppe, but it also symbolizes resilience and adaptation.

This year, the local voices created a powerful mosaic of connection, culture, and care for this unique species that have been featured on the Khulan Day's website we created for this special occasion.

We were especially pleased to see participation expand beyond Mongolia. An organization from Kazakhstan joined us this year, adding their perspectives and solidarity from across Central Asia. And we are excited that a few more organizations worldwide already expressed interest in joining us next year, extending the celebration to the Asiatic Wild Ass and its subspecies.

Our Khulan Day is rooted in people – a grassroots initiative carried by local voices and community spirit since 2012. Once again, it showed how strong and diverse these voices are, and how they can inspire conservation action. This reflects our vision for  Khulan Day: Conserving Biodiversity, Empowering Communities.

Looking ahead, we are exploring new partnerships to extend the reach of Khulan Day in 2026, and we hope to bring together even more communities, organizations, and countries across the khulan and Asiatic Wild Ass’s range. Together, we are laying the foundations for a truly regional celebration of coexistence and resilience.

Thank you to everyone who contributed online this year. Khulan Day exists because of your voices and your stories!
